I recently returned from a trip to London where one of the highlights was catching up with my bestie Yasmin Le Bon (aka Yassy). We met for a long lunch with our husbands, and catching up with Yassy always brings back memories of us as young girls just starting out in the modeling industry. It’s been a while since I’ve seen her as she resides in London and I’m now in Bali. Yet despite time and distance, Yassy and I can always pick up where we left off much like the first time we met. She’s been my “person” for the past thirty years.

Gail Elliott was part of the original Supermodel pack in the 1990s. She covered all the major fashion bibles and starred in campaigns for Versace, Valentino and Fendi and on the runway for Chanel, Hermès, Dior and the first-ever Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show.

It was the haircut that sent shock waves through the fashion world. In 1988, Linda Evangelista’s long brunette locks were cut into a boyish crop by hairdresser Julien d’Y’s. Though Linda’s initial reaction was one of shock and tears, the haircut would be transformative to her career and catapult her into the modeling stratosphere.

Most people recall Helena Christensen as the sultry girl on the beach in Chris Isaak’s iconic “Wicked Game” video. She is also arguably one of the world’s most beautiful women. I met Helena while we were both modeling in the 90s and we have since remained close friends

In my journey through fashion, I’ve had the privilege of working with some of the world’s most beautiful women. Many of my dear friends are “supermodels”, women who represent an ideal standard of beauty.

I’m taking you on a trip back to the 80s and 90s, before Instagram, before social media, before cell phones! There were no Kardashians, the red carpet wasn’t the fashion show it is today, and MTV was new (and played videos, usually my friends Duran Duran). 

On March 6, 1991, Gianni Versace forever changed the fashion world after showing his Fall Winter collection, appropriately dubbed “The Freedom Collection”.

Looking back at the incredible 50 year career of Ralph Lauren, I’m so grateful to have had the opportunity to have worked with this fashion icon, that I thought it appropriate to dedicate a post to this fashion legend - a designer that best represents American heritage and values, none is more emblematic than Ralph Lauren.
