I'm A Superstar: The Dress That Became the Heart of Little Joe Woman

There are dresses you design, and then there are dresses that design themselves. The I'm A Superstar Maxi is the second kind.

It began with a problem I couldn't solve in anyone else's wardrobe. I wanted a strapless maxi that moved — really moved — the kind that catches the air when you walk and falls exactly the way it should when you stop. Slinky enough for a long evening and easy enough for an afternoon that turns into one. I looked everywhere. I couldn't find it. So I made it.

That's the honest beginning of this dress.

Joe named it, by the way — he's good at names, he named all our dogs too. I'm A Superstar, not I'm A Star. He got that right.

Why the cut matters

The dress is bias-cut — diagonal across the grain of the fabric — so it moves with the body rather than against it. In a strapless silhouette, this is everything. Bias-cut satin and viscose crepe don't grip; they flow. The dress follows your body's logic, whatever that looks like, wherever you are.

I've watched women of every shape wear it — on a beach in late afternoon light, in a restaurant with good wine, in a garden somewhere warm. It always looks exactly right.

Seven prints. Each one different.

Four worth lingering on:

Royal Pheasant — dramatic and deep. She walks into a room and everyone notices.

Midnight Leopard — exactly what you'd wear to dance until late.

Avedon Snake — quietly extraordinary. Named for the photographer I worked with early in my career, whose eye for beauty I've never forgotten.

Hanalei Flower — this one is mine. It's tagged as my favourite on the site because it is, honestly, without any strategy behind it. Something about the way that print sits on this silhouette. I wore it recently and didn't want to take it off — which is the most reliable thing I can tell you about a dress.

The other colourways — Butterfly, Magnolia Flower, Zebra — are waiting for you at littlejoewoman.com.

The kind of woman who reaches for it

She knows herself. She's not dressing for anyone else's eye — she's dressing for the day ahead, the version of herself she already is. She's been wearing beautiful things long enough to know the difference between a dress that works and one that just looks like it should.

She comes back to this one. It's the piece that has kept its place in the collection longer than almost anything else we've made. The women who find it don't let it go — some own it in three or four prints. A few have all seven.

I understand that completely.
