INSTYLE x GAIL ELLIOTT'S TRAVEL ESSENTIALS

The model turned designer gives us her favourite Bali travel tips.

Following the local success of her label Little Joe Woman, model turned designer Gail Elliott has opened her first boutique outside Australia, launching a store in Seminyak, Bali. We quizzed Elliott on her favourite Bali haunts and what she packs to stay stylish while travelling…

Why Bali?
“It was my husband, Joe Coffey, who is my business partner, who introduced me to this beautiful island. I find Bali alluring because it is rugged and luxurious at the same time. I love the people, the culture and the sense of community, as well as the climate, beautiful scenery and the freedom that permeates the air here.”

What are your favourite hotspots there?
“I love restaurants like Bambu, La Lucciola, Mama San, Metis and Cafe Petitenget; they all have great menus and wine lists and have become our local places to relax. A special place to have a drink at sunset is Ku De Ta, a sexy bar on the beach, and I like Milk & Madu in Berawa for coffee and a healthy breakfast. Souq in Seminyak is a great cafe, homewares and clothing store that carries a mix of eclectic pieces from around the world and serves a delicious homemade smoked salmon and bagel breakfast. The spa at The Legian Hotel is heaven.”

Do you have any in-flight essentials?
“I always travel with my two black Balenciaga handbags. One is smaller and holds passports, credit cards, lip gloss etc. while the other larger bag is for my laptop, books, magazines, snacks and a light cashmere blanket. I also use a small Samsonite roller suitcase for hand luggage. I find these pieces comforting and they have been wonderful travelling companions over the years.”

What’s your best packing tip?
“I wear a lot of silk clothing and find that sliding my pieces between dry-cleaning plastic and then rolling them keeps them from creasing.”

Do you have a travel uniform?
“Black skinny jeans, black Acne “Pistol” boots, a black or white silk shirt and a black silk blazer. They are comfortable but smart looking and layer well with a fine cashmere sweater or scarf.”
